For most people starting out with AI writing tools, we'd suggest trying Claude first. The output quality is the best we tested — prose sounds like a capable human wrote it rather than an algorithm — and the free tier is generous enough to form a real opinion before paying anything.
If you're already deeply in the Google or Microsoft ecosystem, go with Gemini or Copilot respectively. The integration value offsets the quality difference for most everyday writing tasks.
ChatGPT is the right pick if you want the broadest capabilities — particularly if you want image generation, a large plugin ecosystem, or the ability to have the AI browse the web as part of a task. It's a fine first choice and nobody will steer you wrong recommending it.
